- How does the Dutch health care system works?
- Step 1The first step in the Dutch health care system is the general practitioner. The GP helps you to solve health issues or the GP refers you to a medical specialist. The consultation from a GP is basic health care and therefore costs are covered by your health insurance. Also no mandatory access will be charged to you.Step 2The GP refers you to a medical specialist, such as a hospital or The Student Psychiatrist (The Student Psychiatrist is a specialized mental health care institution). The treatment at The Student Psychiatrist will be reimbursed with your health insurance. However, for treatment with a medical specialist a mandatory access will be charged to you personally.
- Who sets the rates?
The rates are determined by the Dutch government (Nederlandse Zorg Autoriteit - NZa).
Therefore, The Student Psychiatrist itself does not determine the rates.
- What are the rates for appointments with The Student Psychiatrist?
Rates are determined by the Dutch government (Nederlandse Zorgautoriteit - NZa) each year.
Rates 2024.
- Who will be charged for my treatment?
We will send the invoice directly to the following health insurers:
- All Dutch health insurers (mandatory access applies)
- Aon
- EHIC
In case you are insured with Aetna, we will request you to send the invoice to Aetna and Aetna will reimburse the costs to The Student Psychiatrist.

- What is mandatory excess?
According to the Dutch health care system everybody aged 18 or over has a mandatory excess for health care provided under their general insurance policy. You pay the first €385,00 for the costs of healthcare yourself and costs above this amount will be reimbursed by your health insurer.
Besides the €385,00 mandatory excess, you can opt to add a voluntary excess. This could be a good option if you do not need health care very often, as you can save on the (monthly) premium this way. Do bear in mind, however, that when you do require health care you will be required to pay more of the costs for this out of your own pocket.EHIC, Aon and Aetna insurance:As far as we understand, the insurances EHIC, Aon and Aetna don't charge a mandatory access. So the mandatory access is only charged to you when you have a Dutch health care insurance.
More information about Mandatory excess can be found here.
- Is there any charge for cancelling an appointment?
You can cancel or reschedule an appointment up to 24 hours in advance free of charge.
If you cancel your appointment once within 24 hours before the treatment, we will not charge a fee.
For each subsequent appointment cancelled within 24 hours before treatment, we will charge €100.This is not covered by the basic health insurance. We will charge this directly to you.
